The Cobweb Palace Legacy, Fisherman's Wharf
Located on the spot of today's crab pots at Fisherman's Wharf, Abe Warner's Cobweb Palace was a unique dining experience in 1800s San Francisco. Famed for its crab chowder, the Cobweb Palace was a saloon/restaurant/museum covered with odds and ends from around the world. There were Asian masks, Eskimo totem poles, and war clubs from the South Seas. The Cobweb Palace also featured live kangaroos, magpies and cinnamon bears. Abe's parrot would walk about the restaurant saying, "I'll have rum and gum. What'll you have?" In addition to the parrot, monkeys wandered freely begging for peanuts from the patrons. But the most unique feature of this wharf establishment was the thick layers of cobwebs draping the place. Abe loved spiders and never swept away the heavy webs clinging to the restaurants ceilings and walls.
