Chinese Chess, Portsmouth Square
About 450 posts ago we looked at the outdoor chess players who congregate at Hallidie Plaza. Well across town in Chinatown's Portsmouth Square a similar scene takes place with dozens of groups of men participating in a similar game. Chinese chess or Xiangqi dates back to 4th century BC in China and may be the predecessor to the more familiar Western game. Pieces include generals, marshalls, cavalry, elephants, rooks, soldiers, and catapults. Unlike the quiet games in Hallidie Plaza, the onlookers in Portsmouth Square are often very loud, boisterous spectators offering advice, praise, and criticism to the players.
