Chinese Historical Society, Chinatown
This Chinatown YWCA building was designed in 1932 by Julia Morgan, one of the few female architects of her time. Morgan is best remembered for her incredible Hearst Castle at San Simeon. Morgan, who studied with Bernard Maybeck, designed a number of YWCAs throughout California but this is considered one of her finest due to the controlled integration of Chinese design as applied to such a steep location. Today the building houses the Chinese Historical Society of America which focuses on Chinese immigrant life in and around San Francisco.
