Doggie Diner Head, Sloat Boulevard
In the 1960s and 70s there were dozens of Doggie Diner restaurants around the San Francisco Bay Area. Each one of the restaurants featured a seven-foot tall revolving dachshund head on a tall pole. The concept of the spinning doggie head was dreamed up by ad man Harold Bachman back in 1965. The spinning dog heads became a beloved local icon and were even featured in numerous comics of Zippy the Pinhead. As the restaurants went out of business the heads start to disappear, much to the disappointment of many locals who had come to love the goofy pup. In 2005 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, in response to a public campaign, voted to erect a restored Doggie Diner head on the median strip of Sloat Boulevard near Ocean Beach. Welcome to San Francisco.
