PG&E Headquarters, Market Street
The San Francisco Gas Company was founded in 1852 and gas-lit the city for the first time in February of 1854. In 1905 the company merged with a number of other operations to become the Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The company's headquarters here on Market Street was built in 1923. The 18-story building covers an entire city block. By the early 1990s PG&E was operating 173 electric generating units and 85 gas generating stations. Things changed in 2001 when Enron's illegal rigging of the California energy market forced PG&E to enter bankruptcy. However the company emerged from bankruptcy in 2004 and today is one of the most profitable companies on the Fortune 500 list.
