Old Dock, Tomales Bay
Located about 30 miles northwest of San Francisco is one of California's largest and least disturbed estuaries, Tomales Bay. The sparsely populated Bay is home to over 50 species of waterfowl. In 1913 Guglielmo Marconi built a small hotel here to house a ship-to-shore radio station. The station was closed in 1939 and later given to the state to operate as a conference center. In the 1950s plans were made to build a highway here and develop this area, but the local community's successful effort to include the Bay into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area halted those plans. Today Tomales Bay's protected 15 mile length still only has a couple tiny towns and is famous for its oyster farms and game fishing which includes Pacific Herring, California Roach, Steelhead Trout, and Coho Salmon.
