Looking East, The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge
The third, lesser-known, and arguably ugliest bridge in the Bay Area is the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Measuring five and a half miles, it is the Bay's northern most east-west span. The two deck, cantilever and truss span bridge stretches from Richmond's oil tanker pier in the east, to Marin's San Quentin Prison in the west. Despite a vertical clearance of 185 feet the bridge has been struck a number of times by ships and survived. The bridge was recently retrofit to withstand up to a 8.3 magnitude earthquake and while the refitting cost a whopping $540 million it came in $136 million under budget.
