French Toilet, Market Street
There are twenty five of these public French toilets installed throughout San Francisco. The toilets are wheelchair accessible and automatically self-cleaning. They cost 25 cents to use, but anyone that cannot afford the fee can obtain free tokens at most non-profit organizations. After use the toilets automatically clean and sanitize all surfaces for the next patron. The $100,000 units are built by the JCDecaux Group of Paris who also provided the city with a number of similarly designed newspaper and advertising kiosks. These toilets have been so well received that a dozen other U.S. cities are now considering similar units.
