Nike Launch Pad, Rodeo Valley
Located three miles north of San Francisco, the Nike Missile Site SF 88L is the only preserved example of the 300 such sites around the country. Originally housing twenty Nike-Ajax surface-to-air missiles in the 1950s, the site was later re-equipped with larger and more powerful Nike-Hercules missiles. This site was shut down in 1974. Today, public tours take you below ground to see six Hercules missiles and the early computers and radar equipment that guided them. In the background behind the lagoon is Fort Cronkite, which once protected Rodeo Valley and has now become property of the National Park Service.
