Lone Sailor, The Golden Gate
On the northern side of the entrance to the Golden Gate, the Lone Sailor keeps vigil. The 7-foot, 800-pound bronze statue honors everyone who sailed out of the San Francisco Bay in service of the country. More than one and a half million service men and women shipped out of San Francisco during World War II alone. The statue sits in the Memorial Plaza on Marin's Vista Point. The Plaza is constructed on sixteen compass points and built with six types of granite from around the world. The $2.2 million memorial was constructed completely with private donations.
