Treasure Island, San Francisco Bay
Constructed for the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939, Treasure Island sits in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. After the Exposition it was intended that the man-made island be converted into municipal airport but never came to be due to the proximity of the later-built bridges. It did however serve as an air terminal for Pan Am's famed China Clipper seaplanes that flew from San Francisco to the Pacific and Asia. The island also housed a naval base, which in 1993, was turned over to civilian hands. Today some of the old military hangars have been converted to motion picture studios and the island still presents one of the best views of San Francisco.
