Vulcan Street, Upper Market
When is a street not a street? When it's a set of stairs instead. Vulcan Street is actually a three-block long staircase hiddened away in a charming neighborhood off Upper Market. The residents here have traded convenience for privacy and exceptional views. The stairs lead up to cozy cottages half-hidden by trees and private gardens. The homes can only be reached by foot, meaning all groceries, furniture, and other purchases must be carried up stairs that would challenge the most fit gym stair-master. Despite the inconvenience, residents here wouldn't trade their quiet, romantic enclaves for any drive-in, three-car garage. There are dozens of these staired streets in San Francisco, each with their own personality and history.

Having been a former resident of the Vulcan Stairway, I have to agree. I lived in the last house at the top of the 230+ step stairway, yet I loved every minute of that killer climb. Redwoods, a Zen garden, charming cottages, beautiful canopy of trees and flauna, all maintained by the stairway residents. It is a magical, hidden oasis that was an absolute joy to come home to after a day in the chaotic city. Even most SF locals and life long cabbies have not heard of the Vulcan Stairway and usually can't find it. It makes for a perfectly peaceful refuge in the city, just don't plan on calling a cab to pick you up at the top!
