Firehouse, Geary Avenue
Today is the one hundred year anniversary of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. At 5:12 am on Wednesday, April 18, 1906 a 7.7 earthquake city shook for forty seconds followed by a second 8.3 shock that lasted twenty seconds. Roads twisted, buildings fell, and fires ignited. Fanned by the wind, three of the largest fires merged into a single inferno with temperatures up to 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit. Fireman worked nonstop without rest and often without water. Finally, after three days and nights, the largest fire in urban history was defeated. Despite the heroic work of the San Francisco Fire Department, three thousand people were killed and two-thirds of San Francisco was destroyed. If you can, take a moment today to remember those who died and those who fought selflessly to save others, one hundred years ago.
