Nestled behind the Sentinel Building, the Transamerica Building is the tallest and most recognizable feature of the San Francisco skyline. Designed originally in 1970 to be 1,000 feet tall, the Transamerica was scaled down to 853 feet due to protests at the building's unusual shape and scale. The wings at the top of the building hold elevators, stairs, and a smoke tower. Some have claimed that the building's shape is proof that San Francisco is the new Atlantis. According to legend, a pyramid loomed over the original Atlantis before it fell into the sea, and the reincarnated Atlantians are gathering here once again, in preparation for an earthquake and another tumble into the sea.
