Bike Riders, Arguello Street
Bicycling is big in the San Francisco Bay Area. The area not only gave birth to the mountain bike but also to the Critical Mass movement which started here in 1992 and promotes bicycle transportation. Critical Mass has contributed to 30,000 San Franciscans using their bikes on a daily basis. The movement has spread internationally to over 300 cities. Additionally, just last month the Marin County Board of Supervisors gave the OK for the county to participate in a landmark bicycle transportation experiment. The county's $25 million Transportation Vision Plan will create initiatives to boost the county's percentage of non-motorized trips from 11 percent up to 20 percent. If these goals can be reached in the hilly Bay Area, the model and the lessons learned could affect the entire country.
