"The Damn Finest Fog in the World"
Those words have often been used to describe the unique San Francisco fog. In truth, due to water, winds and topography, the fog here is different than in other place in the world. Typically fog comes from warm air passing over cold surfaces, resulting in a dark damp smudge that hides the sun. In San Francisco there are two distinct air streams, one warm and the other heavy with water vapor. As the water stream condenses and drops, it combines with the tiny salt particles from the ocean spray. The result is a fog that is a thing of beauty and motion.

Our fog rolls in silently at 10 to 20 miles per hour carrying as much as million gallons of water per hour through the Golden Gate. The San Francisco fog may be either low tule fog, like that pictured above or high fog, appearing as a cloud. It also may be wet or dry. The wet fog provides the only precipitation the city sees in the summer months while the dry fog is just as dense but without any resulting droplets. San Franciscans enjoy watching the summer fog roll in during the morning and afternoon only to have it disappear in the small hours of the night, with the whole show beginning again the next morning.

We, who live in the Bay Area, are the luckiest people on the planet! Thanks for the gorgeous photo - especially the full-sized one.

I ditto what dutchbaby said, we live in the best spot and there is nothing more magical than watching what I call the dragon's breath roll in from under (and over) the Golden Gate Bridge and into the bay. The enveloping blanket as I walk up the California Street hill to my apartment on some evenings is the most wonderful feeling in the world. It is also the most wonderful feeling to feel the fog rolling in and hearing the fog horns when a heatwave has broken and nature's AC has kicked back in.

Your photos do our beautiful city justice, in all it's majesty, beauty and quirkiness!

This surprises people, but the fog is easily the number one thing I miss about home. I love those hours in the early afternoons when, driving around the city, you can go from sunlight to submerged in fog as you go up and down the hills. And falling asleep to the sound of fog horns...

It is very difficult to explain to people who live elsewhere that you love the San Francisco Fog. When you do, people think you've become a little crazy... until they see it. From time to time, on Nob Hill, you can see a single column of fog progress towards the East Bay while everything around that column stays sunny and clear. I don't know why but that sight always makes me feel like a little kid looking at a Xmas tree. Great picture and post. Damn straight, it's the damn finest fog in the World!
