Neiman Marcus, Union Square
Seen from behind one of the San Francisco Hearts, the Neiman Marcus store on Union Square is one of three buildings in the city designed by renowned architect, Philip Johnson. Constructed in 1982, the giant harlequin-patterned structure was updated with a right-angled glass atrium in 2002. Floating above the soaring atrium is the Rotunda Restaurant, with its stained glass dome featuring a sailing ship and the motto "Fluctuat nec Merguitur"—"I float but do not sink". For classic film buffs, the opening aerial shot of Union Square in Francis Ford Coppola's, The Conversation was filmed from atop this building's location.
