Every year various magazines rank the 'Fittest' and 'Fattest' cities in America and San Francisco usually finds itself in the top five fittest cities along with other perennial notables such as Honolulu, Seattle, and Denver. While the ability to accurately measure such a virtue seems dubious to me, San Francisco does have a number of factors in its favor. Immediate access to the Bay, the Pacific Ocean, lakes, mountains, forests, and the area's large ratio of park land offers many options for recreation. Pleasant weather nearly year-round also contributes. Additionally, there is the area's focus on organic foods and a general disregard for smoking, fast food, and chain restaurants. Finally, San Francisco's compact size and parking issues make biking or walking a practical option for quick trips or even commuting. So where does Los Angeles rank you ask? During the last two years L.A. has ranked in the top five fattest cities.

Note: my inclusion of that last note has nothing to do with the fact that the Giants are currently behind the Dodgers in the NL West.
