City of Paris, Union Square
In 1850 the Verdier brothers from France, opened a store aboard the ship La Ville de Paris to serve the gold miners passing through San Francisco's harbor. In 1896 they moved into their new beaux arts store, the City of Paris Dry Goods Company, across the street from Union Square. When the building was finally demolished in 1981, to make way for a Neiman-Marcus department store, the original elegant leaded glass skylight from the City of Paris was incorporated in the restaurant of new building. Perched four floors above the sales floor, the Rotunda restaurant offers expansive Union Square views and a plush dining experience. The restaurant is a San Francisco institution among the ladies-who-lunch set as well as visiting celebrities.
