The Many Lives of Notre Dame Plaza
During the 1840s and 1850s this was the site of San Francisco's Bull Ring. Inside the 100 foot ring vaqueros engaged in bloody fights, not only with bulls but with grizzly bears as well. Outcries over the brutality forced the ring to close in 1854. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur then built a convent on the site in the 1870s. The convent remained until the 1980s when the building was turned into San Francisco's Notre Dame High School, which it remained until 1997. Today with the grounds landscaped and a courtyard with garden added, it is Notre Dame Plaza, a low-income senior housing facility and one of San Francisco Historical Landmarks.
