A Changing Neighborhood, Mission Bay
Looks can be deceiving, this work-a-day dockyard area south of downtown is the epicenter of yet another San Francisco business boom. San Francisco's Mission Bay district is positioned to be the hub of the country's biotech industry with a new, massive, $3 billion, 303-acre facility which will be anchored by the UCSF Mission Bay campus. With over 820 biotech companies, the Bay Area is expanding on its status as the birthplace of biotech. The area has a wealth of research institutions such as Genentech, Chiron, Amgen, Gilead Sciences, Berlex, Applied Biosystems, and Genecor employing a 250,000-person strong biotech work force. Additionally the life sciences research is supported by nearby universities such as Stanford and UC Berkeley.[ MAP J-17 ]
