New Main Library, Larkin Street
The New Main Library opened in 1996 after four years of construction and 117 years after San Francisco's first public library. The seven level, 400,000 square foot New Main serves as the center of the city's 27 branch libraries. The library with its postmodern classical facade of silver stainless steel recessed columns and understated ornament was featured in the 1998 film City of Angels. The New Main Library is located on the East side of the Civic Center on the spot originally designed to be San Francisco's opera house, Marshall Square.
