In a city that has no shortage of options in body manipulation (piercing, branding, cutting, tattooing, and even attaching horns), Lyle Tuttle Tattooing stands out. Lyle started his business here in 1960 and is one of the superstars of the craft. Tuttle has inked clients such as Janis Joplin, Peter Fonda, Cher, and Joan Baez. He's been on Johnny Carson and photographed by Annie Liebowitz for Rolling Stone. He even developed the modern standardized technique for the sterilization of tattooing equipment, working along with the San Francisco Department of Health. His tattoo parlor on Columbus Avenue also contains a collection of early equipment and designs.
