Cable Car Barn and Museum, Mason Street
One of the great free museums in San Francisco is the Cable Car Barn and Museum, pictured above, located on the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines near Chinatown. Along with old uniforms and equipment, including an original cable car from 1873, are diagrams that explain the inner workings of the system and how a cable car operates. The museum also features an underground viewing platform where you can see the cables turning on their giant wheels. There is also a nice gift shop sells, along with other items, authentic brakeman caps, shirts, and even small lengths of used cable as souvenirs.
