The Saloon, North Beach
Built in the 1850s, The Saloon is the oldest continuously run saloon in San Francisco. Ferdinand Wagner sold Bavarian beer here for five cents a mug to Gold Rush miners downstairs while the brothel upstairs serviced other needs. During the fire after the Great Earthquake of 1906, longshoreman and firemen chose to save this building while most of its neighbors burned down. Today The Saloon is one of San Francisco's premiere blues venues/dives with live music every night. The Saloon was recently featured in the romantic comedy, 'Just Like Heaven' with Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo, a fact that I'm not proud I know.
