Gay Cleaning, Castro District
For the last 35 years the Castro District has been America's 'gay hometown.' In the 1970s thousands of gay men, attracted by the area's proximity to Haight-Ashbury and the eclectic shops, started to move into what was then known as Eureka Valley, a predominately Irish neighborhood. Gay couples then began to buy and restore the district's beautiful Victorian homes and a community was established. The ironically-named dry cleaners pictured above predates the influx of gay residents but one imagines that other local businesses such as 'Does Your Mother Know?', 'Orphan Andy's', and 'The Sausage Factory' were more purposefully named.
