Car-Sharing, San Francisco
For many people the prospect of owning a car while living in San Francisco is not a practical option. Parking, when available is very expensive and subject to many restrictions and time limits. Additionally, the city's compact size and the wide availability of other transportation options makes car ownership an unnecessary expense. For the many people that feel this way, car-sharing is an attractive alternative. First introduced in European cities, car-sharing companies offer cars for short-term trips, charging hourly or daily rates. The companies take care of the gasoline, insurance and maintenance. Drivers can book the cars online or on the phone and pick the cars up at various locations across San Francisco. FlexCar, CarShare, and Zipcar are just some of the car sharing companies that operate in San Francisco. With cars such as Priuses, Minis and BMW convertibles it's easy to find the right vehicle for an weekend at the beach or a trip to IKEA. Currently about 15,000 people are members of car-sharing services in the city, a number that is growing by a third every year.
