Car Shopping, Van Ness Avenue
"Our convertible models are on the third floor." Due to the cost of commercial space in San Francisco (as much as $1,677 per square foot on Union Square), car dealerships are expensive propositions. That is why the car dealers on Van Ness are vertical, rather than horizontal, operations. Elevators take car buyers up to see additional models on upper floors. An odd experience for any first-time car shopper in the city. Van Ness is one of the major North-South streets through San Francisco and it marks the spot where fire fighters made their stand in 1906, blowing up building to the East of Van Ness to halt the Great Earthquake's fire from spreading West.
