Mini Series, Day 2 of 4
No trip to the zoo would be complete without a visit to the Lion House. Every day at 2:00 p.m. the San Francisco Zoo presents a public feeding of the big cats. While horsemeat and rabbitmeat are usually the menu, on December 22nd of last year things went wrong. One of the keepers feeding the animals was mauled, her right arm chewed by a Siberian tiger named Tatiana (picture above) who reached under the cage and seized the hands of the keeper. The keeper is now recovering from her wounds. This however was not the first accident of its kind at the zoo. In 1935 a mountain lion named Bruce grabbed and chewed the hand of a San Francisco policeman before his partner was able to free him and in 1949 a polar bear called Mischa crushed the arm of visitor, not so wisely, offering a lump of sugar.
