Military Museum, Presidio
The building that houses the Presidio Army Museum served as base's hospital from 1857 until 1973. Now open to the public as a free museum, the building contains both military and civilian displays, dioramas, and artifacts. Included in the museum are displays of the "Buffalo Soldiers", the Ninth U.S. Cavalry's African-American troops that were stationed here at the turn of the century. More than 175 Buffalo Soldiers are buried in the Presidio Cemetery. Today the Presidio's 76,000 acres and 800 buildings are managed by Presidio Trust in partnership with the National Park Service. The U.S. Park Service rangers' hats and uniforms are based on those worn by the Buffalo Soldiers.
