Telegraph Hill, North Beach
Previously known as Windmill Hill and Signal Hill, Telegraph Hill got its name from the device on its crest which would warn San Franciscans of ships entering the Bay.During 1849-1851 the slopes of Telegraph Hill were known as Sydneytown, home to the infamous Sydney Ducks. The Ducks, a street gang, were British ex-convicts from the Australian penal colony who, along with another gang, the Hounds, terrorized the city with brutal muggings and lootings. In 1851 a group of 180 citizen vigilantes captured, flogged, and hanged a number of the Ducks. This action quickly and effectively ended the hoodlums' reign of terror.
