Street Car and Cable Car, Muni on the Job
The San Francisco Municipal Railway, or 'Muni' as locals call it, is the largest public transit authority in the city. Muni is responsible for 1,000 vehicles and transports 1,000,000 people daily within the city limits. Muni runs not only the city's buses but the cable cars, street cars, and light rail as well. Muni dates back to 1912 with its first electric streetcar line. Today over 300 of Muni's vehicles are still zero-emission vehicles. These trolleybuses are powered by overhead electrical wires. All the electricity to run Muni's trolleybuses and streetcars comes from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park.
