Dawn in the East, San Francisco Bay
The San Francisco Bay Area attracts millions of visitors each year but in the autumn of 1985, it attracted one very special visitor. Humphrey was a 80,000-pound, 40-foot humpback whale who, while migrating from Alaska to Mexico, entered the Bay and got lost. Unable to find his way back to the Pacific, Humphrey traveled the Delta as far as Rio Vista, sixty-nine miles away.

For weeks scientists and local fishing guides tried to lure Humphrey out of the Bay. They finally succeeded by playing bio acoustic sounds of other humpbacks which Humphrey followed out to the ocean. Since then local whale watchers watch for Humphrey's distinctive markings every year and track his annual migration. In 1988 the confused Humphrey once again swam a mile into Bodega Bay, just north of San Francisco, before heading back out to sea.
