MoAD, Mission Street
One of the newest museums to open in San Francisco is the Museum of African Diaspora, or MoAD, located in the city's Yerba Buena Gardens museum district. The MoAD opened in December of 2005 around the corner from San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art. The small three-story museum tells the story of the origins, adaptations, cultural history, and influence of African Diaspora through art and artifacts. One exhibit, 'The Slave Passage' offers pictures and narratives of that chapter in African history. Local journalist Belva Davis, one of the museum's Board of Directors states, "The MoAD reflects the fact that all of us are African in origin."
