Vulcan Street, Upper Market
When is a street not a street? When it's a set of stairs instead. Vulcan Street is actually a three-block long staircase hiddened away in a charming neighborhood off Upper Market. The residents here have traded convenience for privacy and exceptional views. The stairs lead up to cozy cottages half-hidden by trees and private gardens. The homes can only be reached by foot, meaning all groceries, furniture, and other purchases must be carried up stairs that would challenge the most fit gym stair-master. Despite the inconvenience, residents here wouldn't trade their quiet, romantic enclaves for any drive-in, three-car garage. There are dozens of these staired streets in San Francisco, each with their own personality and history.
