Palms Trees & Ice, The Embarcadero
While San Francisco hasn't seen temperatures low enough to bring snow since a dusting back in 1976, the Kristi Yamaguchi Holiday Ice Rink at the Embarcadero Center has been a tradition for the last 13 years. The outdoor rink is set up from early November through New Year's Day. Yamaguchi, a Bay Area native won a Gold Medal for the U.S. in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games. She also won the senior U.S. championships pairs in 1989 and 1990 with another Bay Area skater, Rudy Galindo.

Just a quibble, but I remember seeing a dusting of snow in 1999. Everyone on my block came out of their houses and looked around in amazement, as though the sky were falling. Anyone else remember this?

You're right, my research actually said the last 'measurable' snowfall was in 1976 on Twin Peaks. What neighborhood were you living in?

Noe Valley, and it really only lasted for an afternoon, so I suppose it wasn't measurable by almanac standards. But exciting nonetheless.

By the way, thanks so much for all the brilliant, moving photography you post. This blog has been the greatest source of comfort for this very homesick S.F. native. Having seldom travelled before leaving home, I was rather unprepared for how unpoetic (for lack of a better word) other American cities are.
