Black Bart, Photo Standee
In 1877 a mysterious man started robbing Wells Fargo stagecoaches. He was described as a distinguished gentleman by those robbed and he always left a note behind, signed 'Black Bart, Po8'. During eight years and at least 28 hold-ups, Black Bart's legend as a dashing thief grew and he became a favorite with penny novelists of the time. Eventually he was caught after a handkerchief he left a robbery was tracked down by its San Francisco laundry mark. Black Bart was arrested and spent four years at San Quentin, after which he left San Francisco and the hold-up artist and poet disappeared from history.
