San Francisco's highly diverse ethnic mix is the result of overlapping waves of immigration. The original native American population was replaced by a Hispanic population in the mid 1800s which was in turn displaced by middle and northern Europeans in the late 1800s. There was an influx of African-Americans during WWII, followed by a second Hispanic wave soon after. The Asian population has continued to grow since the 1800s, while the European and African-Americans have begun to slowly decrease in the city. Today around 45% of San Francisco is white, 30% Asian, 13% Hispanic, and 10% African-American.
