Yerba Buena Gardens
Originally conceived as a sports venue in the late 1950s, Yerba Buena Gardens evolved into an 87-acre cultural and commerce development when it finally opened in 1993. The neighborhood, walking distance from downtown, was previously dominated by run-down hotels and industrial buildings. They were replaced by museums, galleries, performance spaces, shops, restaurants, and public gardens with terraces.

Today Yerba Buena Gardens is home to the Museum of Modern Art, Center for the Arts Theater, Ansel Adams Center for Photography, Moscone Convention Center, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Waterfalls (pictured above). The success of this development has attracted many other museums and cultural buildings encircle the Gardens, including Museum of Craft and Folk Art, Museum of the African Diaspora, Mexican Heritage Museum, Contemporary Jewish Museum, and even the Cartoon Art Museum.
