Dangerous Beauty, The Golden Gate
A rocky shoreline combined with, a narrow channel, strong currents, submerged rocks, and sea-level fog has resulted in hundreds of shipwrecks off San Francisco. The earliest recorded large ship to go down was the 'Sagamore' off the Embarcadero in 1850, taking 40 men with her. The greatest tragedy was the sinking of the steamer, 'Rio de Janeiro' in 1901 with 128 lost. The most recent was the freighter, 'Benevolence' which lost 18, just outside the Golden Gate, in 1950. Today the remains of several vessels are visible at low tide off Lands End.
