Gorbachev Institute, Crissy Field
Who would have ever guessed that part of a U.S. military base would become the foundation headquarters for a former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Russia? Well that's exactly what happened in April of 1993 when this building on Crissy Field in the Presidio officially became the U.S. headquarters for Mikhail Gorbachev's Gorbachev Foundation. Gorbachev, the Nobel Peace Prize winner, who helped end the political supremacy of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union and the Cold War established the Foundation to "contribute to the strengthening and spread of democracy and economic liberalization through a program of advocacy, research, and education."
