Lawn Bowling, Golden Gate Park
Whites only, white clothing that is. One hundred years ago the Scottish fraternal organization, the St. Andrew's Society formed a lawn bowling club in San Francisco. In 1912, a year after California suffrage, the Women's Golden Gate Lawn Bowling Club was also established. In 1979 the two organizations merged and formed the San Francisco Lawn Bowling Club, the oldest public club in the country and the first municipal lawn bowling green opened in the United States. The club currently has over 130 members and is housed in an Edwardian-style clubhouse adjacent to the greens. The SFLBC boasts many national honors, and one gold medal-winning world champion.
