Abandoned Police Station, Mission District
The Mission District is a Hispanic neighborhood that also includes a strong Lesbian community. The district was originally a German and Scandinavian neighborhood whose working-class residents left after the 1906 earthquake. The area then became home to the newer immigrants, the Irish and Italians. By the 1960s the area was transforming again, this time to a neighborhood for the immigrants from Mexico and Central and South America. A large Lesbian community started to congregate here in the 1970s. Today the Mission, filled with its many hip restaurants and bars, musical venues, and colorful murals, remains a relatively affordable neighborhood and one of the sunnier districts in the city.
