Presidio Golf Course, Arguello Gate
In 1895, seven years after the first golf course was built in America, local insurance executives struck a deal with the U.S. Army to construct a golf course in San Francisco. It was decided that it should be built on the southern border of the Presidio military base. Within a few years the course was complete and soon those in the Bay Area were able to enjoy the game sweeping the nation. During the 1906 earthquake the Presidio's fairways served as a refugee camp for homeless San Franciscans. When the Presidio was decommissioned in 1994 the base and golf course was transferred to the National Park Service and opened to the public. Today you can enjoy a round of golf amid the century-old Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine trees while enjoying the Pacific Ocean breeze. Afterward, lunch is available in the newly constructed, cherry wood and limestone, craftsman-style clubhouse.
