Lone Surfer, Ocean Beach
Once known as the 'Outside Lands', the area around Ocean Beach was one of the last areas settled in San Francisco. With endless sand dunes the area was considered uninhabitable. In fact early motion picture companies simulated vast desert scenes by filming in the deserted dunes. That all changed in 1906 when families started to relocate here following the great earthquake and fire. Today the area is known as the Outer Sunset and even with the often foggy weather it remains one of the more popular family neighborhoods in the city. Along with its Irish, Italian, and Russian roots, there is broad ethnic diversity to this neighborhood, with more than a third of its residents Asian or Pacific Islander. All this adds a wonderful 'global village' feel in the district's neighborhoods, shops, and restaurants.
