Night Cable Car - Aquatic Park
San Francisco's cable cars are the only National Historic Landmarks that move. Designed and built in 1873 by Andrew Hallidie, the cable cars are pulled up and along the streets and hills of the city by gripping a inch and a quarter thick, underground steel cable. At the end of each line there are turntables where the cable cars must be spun manually for their return trips. At its height, the city's cable car system was 110 miles long. In 1947 the mayor wanted to discontinue the system but a popular campaign collected 50,000 signatures to put the issue on the ballot where 77 per cent of San Francisco voted for an amendment to keep the cable cars running. You can try your skill as cable car gripman here.
