Caffe Trieste, North Beach
With the first espresso machine on the West Coast, the Giotta family has been running Caffe Trieste since the 1950s. This North Beach landmark was the favorite of Jack Kerouac, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and other beat writers. Today the Caffe Trieste is often featured in films and celebrities such as Tony Bennett still stop by for one of the 600,000 coffees sold here yearly. San Franciscans know to show up at 2:00 on Saturdays when Giotta family members serenade their customers with operatic arias, accompanied by piano and accordian.
