Fisherman's Wharf, Northern Waterfront
Attracting more than 12 million visitors annually, Fisherman's Wharf is one of San Francisco's must-see destination for visitors. Orginally in the late 1800s the area was used for ship-building, woolen mills, canneries, and warehouses. Back then, the wharf was about three blocks inland, but as the area became more industrial the bay was landfilled and the wharf extended outward. Eventually fishing piers were built and visitors began to arrive to buy the fresh fish, sourdough, and chocolate made here. By the 1950s the wharf was the number one attraction in San Francisco. Today from the wharf area you can view the Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, Angel Island, Alcatraz Island, and across the bay to Sausalito, Tiburon, and the Marin Headlands.
