Flood Mansion, Nob Hill
One of the four 'Bonanza Kings' who made their fortune in the Comstock Load, James Flood, built this 42-room mansion in 1886. The Italianate brownstone featured a Louis XV drawing room, Moorish smoking room, and a domed skylight. The surrounding fence was designed after a piece of lace that Flood's wife had admired. After construction Flood hired a man whose sole job it was to polish the fence. This mansion was the only building standing on Nob Hill after the fire of 1906. Today it is the home of the ultra-exclusive, all-male Pacific Union Club. Although its secretive bylaws allow no information about the club to released to the media, the club tenets have be characterized as "no women, no Democrats, no reporters."
