Pacific Stock Exchange, Financial District
Founded by the interest in mining investments in 1882, the San Francisco Stock and Bond Exchange first traded securities in a basement office with each of the 19 charter members depositing $50. By the 1920's the exchange was trading shares in excess of $2 billion. Eventually the exchange merged with Los Angeles Oil Exchange to become the Pacific Stock Exchange and thus became the first exchange in the world with trading floors in two cities.The San Francisco trading floor finally closed its in 2002. Today the exchange building houses a health club inside its deco walls.
